How are some of these illustrations related to environmental science? This is my former student, Carrie Sunde in a few Pearson commercials!
Reusable Bags What is Science? Environmental Science Whew time flies....it's been 10 years since Carrie was my student in 10th grade biology at North Quincy High School in Massachusetts. In 6 working days, I will be back in the classroom anxiously awaiting that 8:20 bell that signals the start of 1st period. Contacting Carrie to congratulate her on her recent wedding, I can't help but reflect on my first few years of teaching. I'll admit it. I thought I was the "cool teacher". I blended up Happy Meals for nutrient testing, referenced Grey's Anatomy during lectures, and frankly ignored standards that I felt were unnecessary. I must have been so annoying to veteran teachers. Teaching back then was mainly fun because I felt liked by the students. The one moment I cried during school was when I found out a student had said "when Ms. Chen smiles, she can kill a bee" (btw this makes absolutely no sense) to the class while there was a sub. Good grief, was I dramatic and sensitive. Now entering my tenth year, I'm not even sure what a student can say that will make me cry. Things in the classroom have gotten serious. I go by the standards, struggle to keep up with pop culture, and really try to push my students, even if it means that they won't like me. I realize that being a good teacher is so much harder than being a cool teacher. Is that what's known as being jaded? Even in my tenth year, I still spend HOURS planning. I guess what I'm realizing is that teaching doesn't get easier but it does get better...I hope. Oh well....back to planning #lifeofateacher #6moredays #ineedgluesticks |
